Hello and welcome back to Press Play: Your SME Video Advantage!
I am genuinely pumped you’re here for Episode 11, because today we’re diving into what I believe is one of the highest-leverage activities any B2B leader can do right now: LinkedIn video mastery.
Let me ask you something right off the bat: Are you still treating video on LinkedIn like a “nice-to-have”?
If so, we need to talk. Because what I’m seeing in the data—and inside the algorithm itself—is that video has officially moved from nice-to-have to non-negotiable for serious B2B growth.
Here’s a little secret from inside the machine: LinkedIn’s algorithm has a massive crush on native video. We’re talking up to five times more engagement than a simple link. Five times!
So grab your coffee (or your favorite thinking beverage). In the next few minutes, I’m going to hand you a complete playbook that removes the guesswork and replaces it with confidence.
Why LinkedIn Video Hits Different
Think about the mindset shift that happens when someone opens LinkedIn versus, say, TikTok or Instagram.
On most platforms, people are looking for entertainment or escape. They’re in “doom-scrolling slippers” mode. But on LinkedIn? They’ve got their professional hat on. They’re there to learn, solve problems, and make strategic decisions.
This is the most focused business audience you can possibly reach.
And that, my friend, is where video becomes your superpower.
A well-crafted text post can feel corporate and distant. But when someone sees your face, hears the conviction in your voice, and catches the spark in your eyes? That’s when the “know, like, and trust” factor kicks into overdrive.
You stop being a logo and start becoming a real human—someone people want to work with, invest in, or learn from.
The Content Matrix: Never Run Out of Ideas Again
The blank screen is terrifying. I’ve been there. That’s why I created what I call the Content Matrix—four reliable content pillars that keep my clients’ LinkedIn feeds full of purposeful, high-value videos.
Here are the four pillars (in order of my personal favorites):
1. Thought Leadership
This isn’t just repackaging industry news. My unbreakable rule here: share a bold prediction or a contrarian viewpoint. Challenge the conventional wisdom. Take a stand. These videos cut through the noise like a hot knife through butter.
2. Behind the Brand (My absolute favorite)
This is where the magic happens. Let people see the day in the life of your lead engineer. Show the whiteboard session that became the breakthrough product. Pull back the curtain.
Nothing builds trust faster than transparency. You transform from “faceless corporation” into “a team of brilliant, passionate humans I’d love to grab coffee with.”
3. Client Success Stories
We all know written testimonials have their place. But watching a real client—on camera, in their own words—describe their painful before-state and remarkable after-state? That’s cinematic.
These videos don’t feel like marketing. They feel like evidence.
4. Micro-Tutorials
The perfect starter video type. Take the most common question you get from prospects and answer it in 60–90 seconds. No fluff. Pure value.
This positions you as the generous expert rather than the pushy seller. My clients regularly tell me these simple tutorial videos generate the highest inbound inquiry rates.
Production Without Perfection (My Philosophy)
Let me put you at ease immediately: you do not need a film crew.
Your smartphone is more than capable. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s connection. I call this philosophy “Production Without Perfection,” and it’s saved many of my clients from the perfectionism trap that keeps them from ever hitting “publish.”
Here are my three non-negotiables:
- Clear audio – A $20 lapel mic is one of the highest-ROI investments you’ll ever make. People will forgive imperfect visuals. They will not forgive bad sound.
- Good lighting – My secret weapon? A window. Face the natural light. It’s free, flattering, and makes you look like a pro.
- Stability – No shaky cam horror shows, please! Lean your phone against a stack of books or grab a cheap tripod.
One more pro tip: Film in square or vertical format. It takes up more real estate on mobile screens and is significantly harder to scroll past. The algorithm notices when people pause.
The Make-or-Break First Three Seconds
You’re not just making videos. You’re fighting for attention in an endless, competitive feed.
Your only job in the first three seconds is to earn the next three seconds.
My favorite scroll-stopping techniques:
- The Provocative Question – “Is your sales team accidentally training buyers to ghost you?”
- The Bold Statement – “80% of B2B buyers now watch video before purchasing. Are you showing up?”
- The Visual Hook – Dynamic text that pops on screen or an intriguing visual that makes someone lean in.
These aren’t gimmicks. They’re respect for your audience’s extremely limited attention.
The Post Is Just as Important as the Video
Here’s a painfully common mistake I see: leaders create a great video, then slap on a lazy caption that just says “Watch this.”
Don’t do that.
The full package matters. My process looks like this:
- Burned-in captions (non-negotiable—most people watch without sound)
- Strategic copy that adds context and pulls out a key insight
- A soft CTA that sparks conversation instead of demanding a sale
Instead of “What do you think?” I prefer questions like:
“What’s the biggest shift you’ve seen in buyer behavior this year?”
That’s how relationships begin.
Native Video vs. LinkedIn Live: Know the Difference
A question I get constantly: “Should I be doing LinkedIn Live?”
My answer: It depends on your goal.
Think of native videos as your polished, evergreen library. These are your thought leadership pieces, micro-tutorials, and client stories. They’re built to last and be discovered months from now.
LinkedIn Live is entirely different. It’s about energy, spontaneity, and real-time connection. Perfect for Q&As, interviews, or live event commentary.
My simple decision framework:
Is the value in the content itself (evergreen) or in the moment and interaction (live)?
Choose accordingly.
Measure What Actually Matters
It’s so tempting to obsess over view count and likes. Resist.
The real gold is in LinkedIn Analytics. I teach my clients to obsess over three things:
- Audience Demographics – Are the right decision-makers watching?
- Audience Retention Graph – Exactly where are people dropping off? This is pure diagnostic gold.
- Comments – Read them like your business depends on it (because it does). Your next client and next video idea are often hiding there.
